Environmental Review

Organisations quite often have limited knowledge of their environmental risks and impacts of their activities and products on the environment.   Therefore, the first step when considering implementing an environmental management system (EMS) is to assess the current environmental status of an organisation. This Initial Environmental Review (IER) is how an organisation can establish its current position with regard to the environment.

An IER will cover 4 key areas:

• Identification and evaluation of environmental issues and concerns arising from operations (e.g. what emissions are generated that could harm human health or the environment).
• Existing management and operational procedures and practices (e.g. procedures from other systems (e.g.  quality management system) which could be used for the EMS).
• Past environmental accidents, incidents, fines/penalties and resultant corrective actions.
• Identification of legal requirements and the status of compliance (e.g. does the operation have the necessary environmental permits and consents).

The review will involve:

• Pre review research into the environmental issues likely to be present at your organisation.
• Site visit including review of relevant documentation and site activities.
• Production of a targeted report including identification of significant risks, mitigation measures, legal compliance status and an action plan for EMS implementation to ISO 14001:2004.
